Why Serious Gamekeepers Plant 4x More Clover Seed Per Acre

If you’ve been planting clover at the rate the bag suggests and wondering why your food plots never seem to reach their full potential, you’re not alone. Most gamekeepers are working with roughly 8 to 10 pounds of seed per acre. It’s the standard recommendation, and it produces decent results for a while. But there’s a growing body of practical, field-tested evidence suggesting that rate leaves a significant amount of performance unutilized.

Kenny Thompson has been managing food plots professionally for nearly 25 years across roughly 1,400 acres on about 80 different farms in Tennessee. He’s seen what works, what fails, and what separates a merely good clover field from one that lasts a decade with minimal reseeding. His answer to the seed rate question might stop you in your tracks: 40 pounds per acre, minimum.

Why the Standard Seed Rate Falls Short

At 8 to 10 pounds per acre, clover establishes, but it establishes thinly. And this establishment has a cascading set of consequences that most gamekeepers don’t fully connect to their seed rate.

Signs of a weak root system include a narrow stand. The plant’s ability to withstand stressful conditions, like summer heat, drought, and overgrazing, is diminished when its root system is shallow. Because more light is able to penetrate the soil, weed seeds stored in the soil bank have a better chance of germinating. As soon as weeds establish themselves, you’ll have to spray more often, mow more often, and maybe even lose some of the field altogether.

The cycle is expensive. More chemicals, more time, more diesel, and often a full replant within a few years, which means you’re back to spending money on seed again anyway. From a pure cost-benefit standpoint, going heavy on the front end actually saves money over the long term.

What 40 Pounds Per Acre Actually Does

When you plant at four times the conventional rate, two things happen almost immediately that change the entire trajectory of a food plot.

First, the root system that develops is dramatically denser. Clover’s long-term health lives underground, not above it. A thick, interlocking root network holds moisture better, accesses nutrients more efficiently, and recovers from browsing pressure and environmental stress far more quickly. When the plants above ground are damaged, the root system below has enough reserves to recover.

Secondly, the canopy closes down considerably more quickly. Light has a difficult time penetrating the soil under the clover when plants are closely spaced and the stand is actually dense. Instead of using chemicals or a specific mowing schedule, the best way to control weeds is to build a canopy that shades out the competition before they start. There is no way for weeds to get a foothold in a field that is 40 pounds/acre planted in comparison to a thin stand.

The Nurse Crop Strategy

At this seeding rate, Kenny doesn’t plant clover alone. He relies on what’s called a nurse crop to support the clover through its first growing season, and the choice of nurse crop depends entirely on soil conditions.

Most farmers use a mixture of wheat, oats, and cereal rye (not ryegrass) planted at about 20 to 25 pounds per acre, which is half the usual rate. There are multiple uses for this nursing crop all at once. To ensure that clover roots may take root unimpeded, it acts as a soil conditioner, early-season browse, and fierce competitor against weeds.

Second, you can use maxims or daikon radishes, which are brassica nurse crops. Due to the fact that brassicas will not provide nitrogen to the soil, unlike cereal grains, this method is more effective on soils with high nitrogen levels. To avoid overshadowing clover when they reach maturity in late winter, brassicas are sown very sparingly, no more than 3 to 4 pounds per acre.

Your intentions for the food plot will be mirrored in the nurse crop selection as well. The cereal grain method tends to be more advantageous for gamekeepers who hunt mostly in the early season, since it provides attractive feed in the early season. After the frost, brassicas are the most appealing to deer, hunters who target them in the late season generally choose them.

Clover Plus: The Chicory Advantage

Kenny’s preferred product is Clover Plus, which blends clover varieties with chicory. The chicory component plays an important role that goes beyond simply adding a second forage species.

When clover turns dormant in the summer, chicory stays green and accessible thanks to its deep taproot, which is significantly deeper than clover’s root system. Chicory keeps providing browse even when clover goes underground due to the hot, dry weather. This relieves the clover of stress at the precise moment when it is most susceptible to damage. When chicory starts to wilt in the summer heat, it’s actually a sign that clover is in jeopardy.

After the first few years of growth, the field’s perennials begin to lean toward Ladino white clover, with chicory filling in over the spring and summer. When planted in food plots at the optimal density, this combination produces harvests that are usable for a greater percentage of the year than virtually any other method.

Setting Realistic Longevity Expectations

The financial case for this approach becomes clear when you think about longevity. At conventional seeding rates, a clover field might need significant intervention, such as overseeding, replanting, or major weed control efforts, within three to five years. At 40 pounds per acre with the right management, the same field can perform well for seven to ten years.

That’s not just fewer planting expenses. It’s fewer hours on the tractor, less herbicide cost, less soil disturbance, and a more stable, consistent food source season after season. When you frame it that way, the upfront cost of extra seed is far less significant than it seems at the bag.

If you’re preparing fall food plots right now, this information is very timely. The window for clover establishment in the South runs from roughly September 10 to October 15. That’s your planting window, and how you enter it matters enormously.

Consider auditing what you’re currently planning to spend on seed, chemicals, and time managing a thin stand over the next several years. Then compare that to what a dense, well-established stand planted correctly this fall would cost and what it would return in browse, in deer activity, and in stand longevity.

The math tends to make the decision fairly straightforward. Plant thick, get the root system established correctly, use the right nurse crop for your soil, and stay off the field when temperatures push above 88 degrees. The rest takes care of itself.
